Which Version of the Honda Civic Should You Choose?

Thinking about upgrading your vehicle and have the Honda Civic at the top of your list? You're making a smart move. The Civic has long been known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong resale value.

That said, the Civic lineup is more diverse than ever, with multiple body styles and powertrain options—which can make choosing the right one a bit tricky.

Let’s walk through the available versions to help you find the Civic that best suits your needs.

Sedan or Hatchback: Picking the Right Body Style

The first step is deciding which body style appeals to you most. Do you prefer the sleek, classic look of the sedan, or the added utility of the hatchback?

The five-door hatchback offers significantly more cargo space—694 litres versus 419 litres in the sedan. Its wide-opening rear hatch also makes it easier to load bulky items. If carrying gear, luggage, or equipment is part of your routine, the hatchback is likely your better bet.

Regardless of the configuration, Honda offers both gas-powered and hybrid versions—leading us to your next big decision: the powertrain.

Gas or Hybrid: Which One’s Right for You?

Whether you choose the sedan or hatchback, the Civic comes with two main engine options:

  • Gas engine: A naturally aspirated 2.0-litre 4-cylinder producing 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque.

  • Hybrid engine: A 2.0-litre 4-cylinder paired with an electric motor, delivering a total of 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.

The difference isn’t just in performance—though the hybrid is clearly punchier. Where you’ll see a more noticeable distinction is in fuel efficiency:

  • Gas Civic: Averages 6.6 L/100 km

  • Hybrid Civic: Averages 4.9 L/100 km combined

Both are impressively efficient, but if you rack up a lot of kilometres each year, the hybrid could save you more in the long run—provided the upfront cost fits your budget and driving habits.

All Civic models are equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Sport trims also include paddle shifters for a more dynamic feel behind the wheel.

Looking for Performance? Check Out the Si and Type R

For those seeking a more thrilling drive, the Civic lineup includes two performance-oriented trims:

  • Civic Si: Features a turbocharged 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. It comes exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission—a true treat for driving enthusiasts.

  • Civic Type R: The ultimate performance Civic, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder making 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It also features a 6-speed manual and track-ready performance.

However, it’s worth noting that the Type R is no longer officially available new in Canada. Your best bet is to check for remaining dealer inventory—or keep an eye on the pre-owned market.

A Smart Pick, No Matter the Version

Whether you go for the sedan or hatchback, the hybrid or the gas version, or even a sporty trim, the Honda Civic remains a rock-solid choice. It’s a car built on decades of proven durability, strong fuel economy, refined engineering, and driver-focused design.
